Finding a Hotel in Lethbridge
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Lethbridge, Alberta.
There are many reasons people find themselves looking for hotels in Lethbridge, whether they are visiting for business, a wedding or baseball tournament or simply passing through town. Whatever the reason, Lethbridge hotels offer plenty of choices and a host of amenities to suit any traveller's needs.
In Lethbridge, accommodation location is rarely an issue when, equipped with a vehicle, any destination in town is easily accessible within 15 minutes. Shops, parks and restaurants occur in abundance in this city, benefitting locals and visitors alike. There are, however, two main drags to Lethbridge and it is along these routes where most accommodation is found: Mayor Magrath Drive and Third Avenue South—both leading to another major thoroughfare, Scenic Drive. All of Lethbridge's hotels are located in the city's south, which encompasses a large area that includes the downtown core.
MAYOR MAGRATH DRIVE
Lethbridge is situated 105 km (65 mi) from the United States border, with Highway 5 entering the city at its southernmost end, passing by the Lethbridge County Airport en route. Past a succession of big-box stores and supermarkets this highway's speed limit changes around Scenic Drive South to become Mayor Magrath Drive, which dissects the city's south end and eventually intersects with Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway). This long, four-lane road is flanked by houses, parks, a golf course, big-box stores, restaurants and most of the city's hotels.
At the south end near the junction of Mayor Magrath and Scenic Drive there are several hotels that provide the closest accommodation to the airport (home to the famous Lethbridge International Air Show) and are just a couple minutes from the Lethbridge Soccer Complex, the Enmax Centre headquarters for the Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Lethbridge College. Shops and restaurants also surround these hotels. The Premier Inn and Suites and Comfort Inn both include amenities to make guests feel more at home and provide business travellers with amenities so they can do their jobs. Business centres, alarm clocks, high-speed Internet access, free local calls and fitness rooms are standard. The Ramada Inn and Suites includes these amenities in addition to a water park and wave pool, five meeting rooms, an on-site restaurant and lounge.
Farther up Mayor Magrath is a conglomeration of hotels near the cross street of South Parkside Drive, providing very easy access to Henderson Lake Golf Course,Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens, Henderson Lake Park, Spitz Stadium and a host of restaurants. The Heidelberg Inn has been a popular hotel for decades for its convenient location and on-site amenities that include a restaurant, pub, meeting rooms and a business centre. With 66 rooms and nine floors, it offers rooms with city views. Major economy chains make their home in the area too, such as the Howard Johnson Express Inn, a motel set-up with a complimentary, deluxe continental breakfast, and Travelodge, formerly known as Parkside Inn and equipped with a popular sushi restaurant, lounge and bar.
One of Lethbridge's high-end hotels, the Coast Lethbridge Hotel and Conference Centre, formerly the El Rancho, provides updated accommodations and an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, meeting/banquet rooms and one of the city's premier restaurants, Firestone Restaurant and Bar. Also a popular option, the Sandman is located across the street, offering nine storeys, an indoor pool, fitness room, lounge and a Denny's restaurant. Both are located on Mayor Magrath near the main street of Third Avenue South and the Crowsnest Highway.
THIRD AVENUE SOUTH
Located near downtown Lethbridge and just off Third Avenue is the Holiday Inn Expresson Stafford Drive. Many restaurants and shops are situated nearby, as is the city's most popular shopping spot, Park Place Mall. This hotel remains one the city's favourites, equipped with a breakfast bar, indoor pool and water slide, and a 24-hour airport shuttle.
SCENIC DRIVE
Third Avenue leads to Scenic Drive, aptly called because its route runs alongside the edge of the coulees offering a picturesque vantage point. It's also a convenient route that provides easy access to the west and north sides of the city and the Crowsnest Highway, and loops back around to meet with Mayor Magrath Drive at the south end of the city. Near the Third Avenue junction is the Lethbridge Lodge, long considered one of Lethbridge's premier hotels and a local haunt for its nightclub, coffee shop, banquet facilities and lounge. Along with views over the coulees, it provides a close proximity to Park Place Mall, Lethbridge Centre, Galt Museum and Archives, Indian Battle Park, Helen Schuler Coulee Centre, High Level Bridge and Fort Whoop Up. But its real highlight is its heavily planted atrium creating a sort of indoor jungle. The Days Inn is located next door with basic amenities and all the same conveniences of location at economy rates.
FARTHER AFIELD
One of Lethbridge's most popular hotels is a little farther afield than the rest of the hotel and motel options. Residing on 43rd Street, the Quality Inn and Suites provides easy access in and out of the city and to Highway 4 and is walking distance to Casino Lethbridge. Many of Lethbridge's attractions are still only minutes away, including the Whoop-Up Downs and Henderson Park.
